The Wall

A poem by Chris Hibbard
for Mary Jane

Sometimes I like to build a wall
Brick upon brick
Stone upon stone
I hide behind it when you call

It’s not a wall to keep you out
Kiss to kiss
Miss to miss
It’s not you which my wall’s about

It’s more like a wall to keep me in
Hour by hour
Shower by shower
More like it keeps it all within

The wall is hard to understand
Day after day
Way after way
This wall within which lives a man
