The Fire Lives On
A poem by Chris Hibbard
Inspired by Mary Jane
October 13, 2015
Pushed into October
like water from a tap
Mark the book of good intentions
with a wish to beat the rap
Trying to beat Thursday
trying to go on
and as the clock rolls over midnight
hope the fire lives on
Try to keep the flame going higher
Hands hot upon the lighter
We’ll rage into the dying night
First dibs
I call all-niter
Trying to beat Friday
Trying to go on
and when it all winds down tomorrow
Hope the fire lives on
So in the light of the crescent moon
Smoking cigarettes by the fire
Noise in our imaginations
Heard until we’re no longer tired
And in this time no place is better
We’re tired but we can live forever
Trying to beat Saturday
Trying to go on
and when it all winds down on Sunday
Hope the fire lives on
