Matrimony Blues

A poem
by Chris Hibbard

Matrimony Blues

It’s ruthless at home when the father’s a bum
His love lying at the bottom of a bottle of rum
It’s heartbreaking at home when mother is bruised
and a fall from the stairs is the only accused
It’s tragic at home when the love they once had
Now appears to have been a passing trend, a mere fad
It’s ruthless at home when a mother must cry
and search in her soul for more power to try

It’s ruthless at home when the children can’t sleep
Kept up by the demons of secrets mom keeps
It’s heartbreaking at home when an eight-year-old boy
Has no inclination to play with his toys
It’s tragic at home when daddy’s in bed
and it’s not with his wife but his mistress instead
It’s ruthless at home when the love is not there
Though everything’s wrong no one seems to care

  1. Ack. This is part of why I don’t want to get married. Girls tell themselves they need someone, then end up settling for a little less. Then three lives are ruined.

  2. We got to really appreciate the work done!!!!! keep it up.
